Goodbyes…

March 5, 2009 by onehopetulsa Leave a Comment

Malachi leaves for college on Friday, making Wednesday his last day at getAHEAD.

We gave the kids a chance to write him letters which they read out loud during Circle Time. It was really special to see how much they love him.

When Tremell arrived for getAHEAD and I asked him to write his letter, he teared up and cried for the rest of getAHEAD. He couldn’t read his letter in front of everyone but this is what it said:

To Malachi

You can Not

leaVe me I Will

miss you

I will miss

you because  of

foot.bull with you

After everyone finished reading their letters, the younger class presented Malachi with a card they made and then went for the giant group hug.

Tremell and Malachi hug it out…

The youngest class made this card for Malachi…

Nate plays for “He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” while the kids line up for hugs…

We finished everything off with a rap in honor of Malachi done by Demarcus, Rayshawn, Tyrese, Tony, Gregory, and D’Arco.  The whole day was a reminder for those of us who are still here that our labours are not in vain in the Lord…

Pray for Malachi as he leaves for college…

Transitions at getAHEAD

March 4, 2009 by onehopetulsa 1 Comment

One past Wednesdays, we have struggled to transition from group time at getAHEAD to individual tutoring time.

With 40-some kids trying to make connections with 40-some tutors, it’s bound to be a little crazy. But, if you could pray that today the transitioning would go a little more smoothly and that we would have bright ideas about how to make that happen, it would be much appreciated.

Update on Past Intern…

March 3, 2009 by onehopetulsa Leave a Comment

We’re trying to gather updates on what our intern alumni base is up to. Here’s the first one to come in…

Lord-willing, Caitlin will be back as an intern this summer…

I am in my Junior year at the Masters College and am a liberal arts major. My ultimate goal is to become an art teacher in the inner city (maybe Tulsa?? eh? eh?) Right now I am doing a pretty awesome after school art program with some kids in the inner city through a missions organization based in Los Angeles called World Impact. It is like getAHEAD only it has none of that fancy reading stuff, just straight up arts and crafts mayhem. I am hoping to graduate and then get my teaching credential. It would be cool if you would pray for God to direct me in planning for the next few years of my life, and help me to trust him with finances. I am not sure if I can keep paying for the expensive tuition at the Masters College, and I’m trying to plan for next year in that respect. Please pray for my unsaved family and for me to find my joy and satisfaction in Christ alone. That would be lovely. Also, um, I love Springs of Grace.

Pray for Suzetta

March 3, 2009 by onehopetulsa Leave a Comment

Sondra, Qwe-Qwe, and Ewonnya…

 Suzetta…

Suzetta is the mom of Ewonnya (14), Qwe-Qwe (10), and Sondra (9). They’ve been involved with Springs of Grace and One Hope for the past 5 years. Suzetta is 30 years old and was recently diagnosed with advanced M.S.

This afternoon she passed out on the floor and Ewonnya called 9-1-1. She was running a 104 degree temperature when the paramedics arrived. They took her to the hospital where she was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection, given fluids, and then discharged this evening.

Qwe-Qwe is also sick.

Please pray that the Lord would use these things to draw Suzetta and her girls to Himself.

Hat Day…

In honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday (think The Cat in the Hat), we made hats out of newspaper sheets. Here are a few highlights…

Jaysee sports her hat during snack time…

Donovan reading about snakes…

Kayetlynn won the hat drawing contest…she’s posing with her prize next to her art work…

Ms. Robin proudly sporting her hat…she’s one of our Monday volunteers…

Pray for getAHEAD today

March 2, 2009 by onehopetulsa Leave a Comment

We are always wrestling with the tension between our desire to help the kids who act the worst and our need to communicate to them that their behavior is not acceptable.

The last several times we’ve had getAHEAD we’ve had to suspend several kids that we really want to have there. We love these kids so much and we know the realities of their lives that play into the way they’re acting on any given day.

But, all the same, when they’re not responding and they’re creating a disruption for other children, sometimes we have to suspend them, no matter how badly we want for them to be there to receive our love and hopefully see Jesus.

Could you pray that God will help the kids today to listen and obey so that we’re able to let them keep coming…

Thanks…
